Water Resistant watch

Owning a water resistant watch is not something that most people have given second thought. Anyway, why would they bother when there are many other places to observe time? The truth of the matter is that they are not well informed on the benefits attached to it?

To many people a watch is just a watch as long as it can indicate the time well. To some extent I do agree with them. Time management remains to be the main reason as to why I would find myself buying as watch, but wait there is more to it. A water resistant watch gives you more value!

Who needs a water resistant watch?

Anyone can own a water resistant watch but for those spending much time in the water need it more, for instance the deep water divers. If you never like the idea of removing your watch any time you clean your hand or even don’t like the idea of worrying about your watch if it fell in water? A waterproof watch can be of good importance to if you sweat a lot.

Investing in a water resistant watch can never be a bad idea

Today watches have evolved from the role of keeping you updated on the time to fashion accessories.  Probably this is the reason we have some people spending heavily on customized watches.

Anyway, it is important to note that not wall watches are water resistant. And at the same time not all watches remain to be water proof under different conditions. It would therefore be very wise if you first tried finding out more about a water proof watch before patting off with your cash. It does no harm by you trying to find out more about the watch to see whether it can handle all conditions you intend to subject it to.

Tips on how to select a water resistant watch

Different watches have varying capabilities to withstand the water they are exposed to.  You therefore have to understand how well the manufacturers have modified well to perform once subjected to water. During their manufacturing the watches are subjected to ideal conditions to measure their competence.  The consumer can then buy what fits well into their intended use. Here are some of the common water proof categories as set by the manufacturer as charted below:

  1. Water resistant watches as up to thirty meters under water. These are the most common types of the water resistant watches available in the market. You can still have them on in rain or when washing hands but not while swimming or even diving,
  2. Waterproof watches as up to 50 meters below the water. These are good for shallow water swimming and even while in the shower.
  3. May be worn for up to a hundred meters in below the water. This makes them usable for swimming, snorkeling or even by the skin divers
  4. The watch under this category is fit enough for simple scuba diving and deep waters swimming for up 200 hundred meters or more.
  5. For the real scuba divers who are always in the waters they can go for the best of all the other watches. The watches in this category offer the best or our water resistance.

How to maintain a water resistant watch

There are a few technicalities that should always be observed when it comes to  waterproof watches; these tips are meant to help you ensure that it remains waterproof:

  1. When changing the battery get it back to the manufacturer or even a relevant expert. This is meant to ensure that the water resistant watch does no lose this ability,
  2. Always ensure all its screws are tight.
  3. Salty and chlorine water accelerate the aging process of your water resist ant watch. You should therefore take it back to the manufacturer after every two to three years so as to ensure the seals are in good shape.
  4. Finally don’t use it in a hot shower, bath tub or even sauna. Most water resistant watches cannot withstand this heat.

Are you an outdoor person who loves anything to do with the water? If so, you know the importance of a watch that is not going to succumb to the elements. However, did you know that many watches that say they are ‘water resistant’ are not really resistant to water? There are three types of watches that can be considered for the person who spends a lot of time in the water.

The reinforced waterproof watches used daily, the ones that are reinforced for daily use and the one that is best for diving comes down to three basic types. The watch that is rated for use daily is one that can resist normal water such as rain, sweat from exercise and water that can get on the watch when you are shaving or washing your face.

The reinforced water resistant watches for using daily are ones that are okay to be worn when swimming or surfing. Are you in contact with water daily in your profession or for pleasure? If swimming daily is important to you, the watch you wear should be purchased with this in mind. Skin diving is another situation when this type of watch is used.

Divers are often required for police work, such as search and rescue. This is an extremely important profession and the divers must have a watch they can depend upon. Often divers for research dive for history purposes. The artifacts and ship wrecks they dive to find are part of their job. Many ships have sunk over the years and finding the sunken treasures is a profession that pays handsomely.

Underwater watches for diving are used for scuba diving and regular diving. The depths at which you are diving will require the use of different types of watches. These are for use in air diving, professional diving and saturation diving. If you are a diver, it would be wise to check into the different types that are available so you can be sure to safeguard the watch you purchase.

Fishing, whether for pleasure or as a profession, is one instance in which the watch purchased is going to make a big difference. Some people may think just because they buy a diver’s watch it is safe for any type of diving. The manufacturers of these watches do not really give the consumer an idea of how water resistant they are at what depth. This is why the wrong watch is often purchased.

Some divers have researched the type of watch they need for diving, but there are many that do not. They do not know what the underwater watches will withstand when they wear them in the water. Taking the basic phrase ‘waterproof’ to mean the watch is capable of being in the water for any purpose, they often find out this is not the case.

Confused About Water Resistance?

The Importance of the Right Watch

One thing that many divers do not do is check the helium and crown relief valves before they dive. If they are not properly tightened water can enter the watch and suddenly the watch you bought for diving is no longer working. Had you researched the watch needed you would have found the right one for this type of diving.

When you do look up the type of watches that are best for wearing under water, you will find that most chronographs cannot be used while you are under water. The action could cause water to leak into the watch and ruin them. There are exceptions to this type you buy though. A very few use seals so the watch is sealed. Still they are only rated for a certain depth.

When purchasing a watch for diving you will need one that is rated for 150m. This distance is plenty for swimming but if you go swimming in salt water make sure and rinse the watch when you get out of the water. This will keep the salt water from causing corrosion to the watch. Taking care of the watch is just as important as getting the right one.

The types available will include either a digital or the typical type with hands. The digital watch is often easier to see.
