A watch has gone from being just a timepiece to an item of fashion. There are different kinds of watches that are available on the market today. There are wristwatches, pocket watches, and other kinds of watches well. There are also watches that are differentiated by the type of mechanism that is used to power the watch. These are mechanical watches, the electronic watches, quartz watches (battery operated watches), and also automatic watches.
Wristwatches became popular only in the 1920s before which the pocket watch was the only portable watch that was available. When they were invented, they were more significant as an object of fashion than a serious timepiece. Also, it was more common for women to wear wristwatches than men. Wristwatches are the ultimate improvement in portable watches. The wristwatch soon evolved into a serious timepiece and men began wearing them as well.
Timekeeping became more portable and wristwatches became more popular as well. The pocket watch almost became extinct during the First World War when pocket watches seem to be impractical. Since then wristwatches evolved as the primary portable timepiece.
From the beginning there was always a concern about watches getting wet. Traditionally, when watches got wet, they generally stopped working. This was because most of the watches were (and are still) made from metal which can rust if it is exposed to water. Once a wristwatch got in contact with water or rain, it usually proved to be fatal for the watch. This led to the invention of waterproof watches which are widely popular today.
Waterproof watches have wide application in the world today. For starters, people do not have to worry about watches defecting due to exposure to water. For a common person, it may be impossible to avoid contact with water absolutely. Every day exposure to rain and water from the tap could make a watch stop working if it is not waterproof.
Whether a watch is digital or analogue or mechanical or automatic, if it is waterproof, it can be used without having the fear that it will stop if it gets wet. One of the first things that come to mind when talking about a waterproof watch is the usefulness it presents to swimmers. While swimming, any individual would like to keep track of time. Even while in water, people usually resort to looking at their wristwatches for the time.
Also, many individuals do not like to keep removing and wearing their watches again and again. The waterproof watch brings a solution for these individuals as well and allows them to wear watches even during the shower or while using the kitchen sink or a washbasin. Although the waterproof watch is not the latest invention or improvement to a wristwatch, it is certainly one of the most useful improvements for a wristwatch.
Some of the latest improvements to a wrist watch are features like watches running on kinetic energy and watches running on ‘light’ energy. These improvements have eliminated the need for batteries in wristwatches, making them more eco friendly. However, even these watches cannot do without the ‘waterproof’ feature. Most of the watches that are available in the market today are waterproof, at least to an extent.
